Craft activities are quite a number and they are usually described as pastime or professional activities that require specific skills and knowledge of skilled work such as woodturning, metalwork, glasswork among many others. Woodturning is a common craft that makes use of a lathe tool which works by rotating a piece of wood about the axis of rotation and in the end makes a symmetrical object. Cutting, knurling, drilling, sanding, facing, deformation and turning are some of the function of a lathe where in the end it makes a  symmetrical object. Tool handles, knobs, lamps, cylindrical boxes, needle cases, legs, spindles and pegs for furniture, spinning tops, baseball bats among many others are some of the end products of a lathe which are symmetrical.

Other than a wood lathe, there other tools used in woodturning which includes spindle roughing gouge, skew chisel, parting tool, spindle gouge, bowl gouge, French curve bowl scraper and others. These tools use different materials such as steel and carbon steel, and the edge can maintain sharpness depending on the type of high-speed steel that has been used. A spindle roughing gouge is used in making a wooden spindle round by shaping it roughly. During woodturning, creating details on a spindle which includes adding beads and coves is done by a spindle gouge. Another a tool used is a bowl gouge whose major purpose in woodturning is to turn both the inside and outside of either a bowl or a vessel. Skew chisels is a very important tool for making the spindles smooth, cutting beads and they also add some distinct parts on the spindle. Another Wood turning tools used for creating both small and large diameter sections on the workpiece working together with the lathe is a parting tool.

There are also many other tools which perform various roles on the work piece such as drilling holes completely or partly through a wooden item and creating hollow spaces while making steep bowls vases and other hollow vessels. Frequent sharpening of woodturning tools is necessary by use of powered sharpening wheels and abrasives to ensure clean cut when wood is passing through them at a very high speed. Having a protective working gear when working with woodturning tools is important to enhance a person safety thus accidents are avoided. These safety gears that should always be used includes eye and head protective gear to prevent debris and dust from getting into the eyes, respiratory equipment such as nose mask to prevent one from breathing dust being produced and also era protection to avoid damaging years when there is excessive noise. Other safety tools should be used in protecting the hand and skin although gloves should not be used when working with rotating equipment since they can be easily tangled by the machine and also have a protective footwear.
